The Israel Defense Forces’ next-generation tank, the Merkava Mark 5, nicknamed “Barak” (or “lightning bolt” in Hebrew), will enter initial service with the Armored Corps within a year, Wallah reported Thursday.

The development comes after the establishment of a new production line for the production of the platform, the report said.

According to the report, the tank will have an improved Trophy active protection system against anti-tank missiles, manufactured by Rafael; 360 degree camera coverage for day and night views and improved situational awareness; and a heads-up display for the tank commander, similar to that of a fighter pilot.

The tank will also include new advanced sensors allowing it to independently acquire targets and strike them quickly, as well as deploy electronic warfare capabilities and advanced processing systems.

Military officials said the upgrades would increase the tank’s lethality and its ability to generate intelligence for itself and other forces.

Many of these capabilities were outlined in the Defense Ministry’s Carmel next-generation combat vehicle program, which was awarded to Israel Aerospace Industries in October 2021.
